How to play Addiction Solitaire

Addiction Solitaire is a one-deck patience game also known as Gaps or Montana. All 52 cards are dealt face up into four rows of thirteen. The four Aces are removed, leaving four empty spaces—the gaps that let you move the other 48 cards.

The goal

Build four complete same-suit rows. Each row must begin with a 2 in its first column, continue 3, 4, 5 and so on through King, and finish with a gap in the thirteenth column. The four suits may appear in any row order.

Making a move

A card can move into a gap only when it is:

  1. the same suit as the card immediately to the gap’s left; and
  2. exactly one rank higher than that left-hand card.

For example, the 8♥ may enter a gap immediately after the 7♥. Moving the card creates a new gap where the 8♥ used to be, so every choice changes which part of the layout can move next.

A gap in the first column has no card to its left. Only a 2 may enter it, and any suit is allowed. A gap after a King is blocked because nothing ranks above a King. A gap immediately after another gap is blocked too.

Correct runs and reshuffles

A correct run begins with a 2 in the first column and continues in its suit without interruption. Those cards are shaded on Click the Grid and stay in place during a reshuffle.

When no legal move remains, you may reshuffle every card outside the correct runs. Addiction allows three reshuffles; the closely related Montana variant usually allows two. Reshuffling creates four new gaps, but it does not undo the progress already secured at the left of each row.

Choose a raised card and then a highlighted gap. If a gap has only one legal card, selecting the gap moves that card automatically. A first-column gap may offer several 2s, so choose the highlighted 2 you want. Undo reverses moves made during the current session. Reshuffle becomes available only when no legal moves remain.
