Hashiwokakero solving techniques

With the Hashiwokakero rules understood, each move comes from bridge capacity or from the requirement that the final network stay connected.

Compare clue and capacity

An island can receive up to two bridges from each visible neighbour. Subtract confirmed bridges and remove directions blocked by completed islands or crossings. If the remaining clue equals the remaining capacity, fill every available direction to capacity.

Force at least one bridge

Sometimes a clue does not force doubles but still forces connections. A 3 with two available neighbours must connect to both: placing zero toward either would leave a maximum of two. Add one bridge to each before deciding where the third line goes.

Close completed islands

As soon as an island reaches its number, no more bridges may touch it. That can remove a neighbour’s only direction or rule out a line that would otherwise cross the grid. Recount all visible neighbours immediately.

Use crossing exclusions

Two possible bridges that cross cannot both exist. If one is forced, delete the other candidate and update the islands at both ends. A forced crossing often carries information across a large empty part of the board.

Prevent closed subnetworks

Never complete a proper subset of islands as a sealed network. If a cluster has only one possible bridge to the outside, that bridge is forced. In particular, avoid making a double bridge between two islands if it would satisfy both and isolate the pair.

Save connectivity for every group

Think of joined islands as components. Each incomplete component needs at least one possible outward connection until all islands belong to it. This global check is the key difference between a grid whose numbers merely add up and a valid Hashi solution.
